Le 14 juillet est la fête nationale de la France. Ce jour-là, les Français et les Françaises célèbrent l'anniversaire de la prise de la Bastille, ancienne prison d'Etat, détruite par le peuple français en 1789 (mille sept quatre-vingts-neuf).
Toutes les villes et tous les villages sont en fête. Les drapeaux tricolores flottent sur toutes les façades. Les estrades, dressées à tous les carrefours, les terrasses de cafés sont ornées de guirlandes et de lampions.
C'est une fête à mille visages. Elle commence la veille par des retraites aux flambeaux et des bals dans les rues. Tout le monde est dehors. On se dirige vers les places où des orchestres jouent des airs à la mode. On danse jusque tard dans la nuit.
Le 14 juillet, dès le matin, on entend partout la musique militaire. A 9 heures du matin des revues militaires commencent dans la capitale et dans toutes les grandes villes. Des hôtes étrangers viennent assister au défilé du 14 juillet. A Paris, il a lieu sur les Champ-Elysees. Les troupes défilent devant le président de la République.
