C'est bien d'être étudiant! D'abord parce qu'on se sent enfin libre.
Je parle, évidemment, pour ceux qui n'ont pas d'université dans leur ville, et qui sont obligés de quitter leur famille pour vivre dans la ville où se trouve leur faculté: plus de conseils à recevoir, plus d'interdictions, plus d'explications à donner. Je peux passer la nuit entière à discuter avec des amis, puis dormir jusqu'à midi le lendemain, et personne ne me dit rien. Ne croyez pas que je passe ma vie dans les cafés ou les cabarets!
J'ai trop de travail, et ce n'est pas parce que je suis libre que je ne fais plus rien. Au contraire! Seulement il y a une grande différence: quand j'étais au lycée, on me forçait presque à travailler, et alors, bien sûr, je n'en avais pas envie. Maintenant, personne ne m'oblige à le faire. Seuls les examens sanctionnent mon travail. Mes journées, mon trimestre, je suis libre de les organiser comme je veux. Je peux aller au cinéma tous les jours pendant une semaine et ne pas toucher un livre, puis m'enfermer dans ma chambre et «bûcher» comme un fou pour rattraper le temps perdu.
C'est merveilleux d'être libre! Libre d'aller aux cours ou de ne pas y aller. Seuls les travaux pratiques sont obligatoires et contrôlés parce que nous travaillons par petits groupes. J'aime bien les travaux pratiques: je ne les ai manques qu'une fois depuis le début de l'année. Les cours, je les ai manqués assez souvent pendant le premier trimestre, mais pas après. Car il est difficile et ennuyeux de recopier les notes des copains et il vaut mieux travailler régulièrement que bûcher jour et nuit quinze jours avant l'examen. Maintenant je crois que je sais vraiment ce que c'est que la liberté: c'est aussi la responsabilité.
Comme la vie matérielle des étudiants est bien organisée, nous avons du temps libre. Pas de problèmes pour les repas: les restaurants universitaires nous en servent pour des prix modérés. Pas de problèmes pour les transports: nous avons des tarifs spéciaux. Pas de problèmes pour les spectacles: au concert, au cinéma, au théâtre, dans les musées, partout, il existe des tarifs pour étudiants. Nous pouvons même voyager, faire du ski, aller à l'étranger à des prix intéressants. Comme vous le voyez, nous avons des privilèges.
Mais attention! N'allez pas croire que tout est pour le mieux dans le meilleur des mondes! Il reste encore le problème du logement. Où trouver une chambre pas trop loin de la fac et pas trop chère? Quelques-uns ont la chance d'habiter la Cité universitaire ou de trouver une place dans l'une des nombreuses maisons d'étudiants de la ville. Les autres paient souvent très cher des pièces petites, mal meublées, peu ou pas chauffées. Heureusement, il y a les cafés, toujours accueillants: en hiver, il y fait chaud; en été, on est bien à la terrasse, sous les arbres.
C'est là que nous nous retrouvons après les cours. Il est entendu avec les garçons que, pour le prix d'un café noir ou d'un verre de bière, nous pou-vons passer deux heures à fumer et à discuter: deux heures pour refaire le monde, ce n'est pas beaucoup! Nous avons tous des idées, mais il faut se mettre d'accord, et ce n'est pas facile!
